What Is Snap Share in the NFL?
Snap share is the percentage of his team's offensive snaps a player is on the field for, his snap count divided by the team's total. It measures opportunity before anything else happens. NFL offenses ran about 61.3 plays per game in 2025, so one percentage point of snap share is worth roughly half a snap.
How snap share is calculated
Take a player's offensive snaps and divide by his team's total offensive snaps over the same games. A receiver who plays 727 of 1,135 team snaps has a 64.1 percent snap share. Pro Football Reference publishes it directly on each team's snap counts page, in an "Off. Pct" column beside the raw count, and every figure in this article comes from those 2025 tables.
Three things matter before you lean on it. Snap share is offense only, so defensive and special teams work sits in separate columns. It is a share, not a count, so it stays comparable between a fast offense and a slow one. And it counts presence, not involvement: a receiver split wide on a run play collects a snap exactly like the back who carried it.
What the numbers look like on real teams
Two 2025 offenses, taken straight from Pro Football Reference. Philadelphia ran 1,054 offensive snaps over the 17 game regular season, which is 62.0 per game. Los Angeles ran 1,135, or 66.8 per game.
Philadelphia Eagles, 2025 offensive snap share:
- QB: Jalen Hurts 91.6 percent, Tanner McKee 8.4 percent.
- RB: Saquon Barkley 73.3 percent, then a cliff: Tank Bigsby 11.9, Will Shipley 11.0, AJ Dillon 4.7.
- WR: DeVonta Smith 84.3 percent, A.J. Brown 80.0, Jahan Dotson 56.8, Darius Cooper 20.1.
- TE: Dallas Goedert 74.7 percent, Grant Calcaterra 36.1, Kylen Granson 23.2.
Los Angeles Rams, 2025 offensive snap share:
- QB: Matthew Stafford 98.4 percent, Jimmy Garoppolo 1.6.
- RB: Kyren Williams 68.0 percent, Blake Corum 29.3.
- WR: Puka Nacua 64.1 percent, Davante Adams 56.0, Jordan Whittington 39.0, Konata Mumpfield 33.0.
- TE: Colby Parkinson 54.7 percent, Davis Allen 51.5, Tyler Higbee 32.3, Terrance Ferguson 31.4.
Put the two side by side and the useful lesson is that there is no single league-wide benchmark. Philadelphia's top receiver played 84 percent of snaps; the Rams' top receiver played 64 percent and their second played 56, because that offense rotated four receivers and three tight ends. The same 60 percent snap share means "clear number one" on one roster and "part of a committee" on another. Read a player against his own team's distribution, not against a memorized threshold.
Why snap counts are not the same as plays
This trips people up when they try to reconcile a snap count with a box score. Philadelphia's offense was credited with 1,054 snaps, but its box score plays (497 pass attempts, 35 sacks, 478 rush attempts) add to 1,010. The Rams show the same gap: 1,135 snaps against 1,086 box score plays.
The gap is plays that happened but never became an attempt: snaps wiped out by penalty, aborted snaps, and similar. Pro Football Reference also labels its snap counts unofficial. None of that breaks the metric, since a share divides one snap number by another, but do not mix sources and do not expect snaps and plays to tie out.
Snap share is opportunity, not production
Snap share tells you a player was on the field. It says nothing about whether the ball came his way, which is why it belongs underneath target share rather than beside it. The 2025 Rams make the point cleanly: Davante Adams played the fewer snaps of the team's top two receivers at 56.0 percent and still led the entire NFL in receiving touchdowns with 14, while Puka Nacua played 64.1 percent and caught 129 passes. Same offense, different roles, and neither one is explained by the snap number alone.
The practical order is: snap share sets the ceiling on opportunity, target share or touch share tells you how much of that opportunity converts into the ball, and efficiency decides what happens next. A player with a big snap share and a small target share is on the field to block or to occupy a defender. That is a real football job and a poor betting one.
Where snap share earns its keep
- Confirming a role change before the market does. A backup who jumps from 25 percent to 55 percent over two weeks has been promoted, and that shows up in snaps a week or two before it shows up in box score lines and in prices.
- Injury replacements. When a starter is ruled out, the honest question is who absorbs the snaps. Last week's rotation, read as shares, answers it better than a depth chart does.
- Committee backfields. A 68 percent back and a 29 percent back are not interchangeable, even in the same offense, and the gap is the single best predictor of who gets the volume markets.
- Sizing a low-usage dart. If a player is on the field for 20 percent of snaps, no matchup argument rescues the bet. Volume markets need volume first.
What moves snap share week to week
- Game script. A team that trails throws, which keeps three receivers on the field and lifts receiver shares while cutting the second tight end and the fullback. A team that leads runs and does the reverse.
- Personnel packages. How often a coordinator uses 11 personnel (three receivers) against 12 (two tight ends) sets the ceiling for the third receiver and the second tight end before a snap is played.
- Injuries, on both sides of the ball. An offensive line injury can pull a tight end into blocking duty and quietly reshape the receiver rotation.
- Blowouts. Backups play the fourth quarter, so a lopsided game drags starter shares down for reasons that say nothing about the role.
- Rookie ramp-ups. Snap share is where a rookie's rise shows up first, often weeks before the production does.
- Pace and total plays. This one does not move the share, but it moves what the share is worth. Sixty-four percent of a 70 play offense is more football than 64 percent of a 55 play one.
Where the metric misleads
A percentage hides the denominator. Season-long share flattens the week a player left with a first quarter injury and the week he played every snap. Read the recent game log, not just the season figure.
High share, low value is common. Blocking tight ends and perimeter decoys post respectable numbers and deliver nothing to a prop bettor. Always pair the snap number with a usage number.
Route participation is the sharper version. For pass catchers, the snaps that matter are passing snaps. Snap share includes run blocking, so it overstates receivers on run-heavy teams and understates pure pass-catching specialists.
Small samples move fast. Two games of snap data is a rumour, not a role. Give a change three weeks before treating it as the new baseline.
It is a floor, not an edge. Snap share is widely available and priced in for starters. It earns money mainly at the margins: promotions, injury fallout, and committees the market has not re-rated yet.
