What Is a Rushing Attempts Prop?
A rushing attempts prop is a bet on how many times a player carries the ball in one game, posted as an over/under. It is a pure volume market: yards per carry, broken tackles and touchdowns are all irrelevant, only touches count. NFL teams averaged 26.8 rushing attempts per game in 2025.
How the market is posted
The bet is a player total on a count stat. A book posts a number of carries, usually a half point number like 14.5 or 17.5, and you take the over or the under. The half point means there is no push. A carry is credited on a designed run from scrimmage, so kneel downs count against the offense's total but scrambles by a quarterback do count as rushing attempts.
What makes this market different from almost every other rushing bet is what it ignores. A back can gain 3 yards a pop, fumble twice and never reach the end zone, and an over on carries still cashes. That is the appeal for a certain kind of bettor: you are forecasting a coaching decision and a game script, not an athletic outcome. It is also why this prop and the rushing yards prop can settle on opposite sides of the same afternoon.
What a normal number actually looks like
NFL.com's 2025 team rushing table shows 14,601 rushing attempts league wide across 32 teams and a 17 game season. That works out to 26.8 rushing attempts per team game, at 4.4 yards per carry and 116.9 rushing yards per team game.
The spread between teams is wide, and it is the first thing worth internalizing:
- Most run heavy, 2025: Buffalo at 547 attempts, 32.2 per game
- Also near the top: the Giants (511), Ravens (507), Seahawks (507) and Bears (505)
- League average: 456 attempts, 26.8 per game
- Fewest: Arizona at 366 attempts, 21.5 per game, and the Raiders at 369, 21.7 per game
So the most run heavy offense in the league handed out roughly 11 more carries per game than the least. That is more than a full extra series of runs, every week, before you get anywhere near which player is taking them.
Every carries projection is two numbers multiplied together
A player's attempts are team rushing volume times that player's share of the backfield. Both halves move, and neither one on its own tells you much. Here is the 2025 leaderboard read through that lens, using season attempts from Pro Football Reference and team totals from NFL.com:
- Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis: 323 carries, 19.0 per game, the league lead. Indianapolis ran it 442 times, slightly below league average. Taylor's edge was share: 73 percent of his team's carries.
- Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco: 311 carries, 18.3 per game, on 65 percent of a 481 attempt offense.
- James Cook, Buffalo: 309 carries, 18.2 per game. Buffalo ran the most in football (547) but Cook saw only 56 percent of it, because Josh Allen took 112 carries himself.
- Derrick Henry, Baltimore: 307 carries, 18.1 per game, 61 percent of 507.
- Bijan Robinson, Atlanta: 287 carries, 16.9 per game, 60 percent, with Tyler Allgeier absorbing 30 percent.
The cleanest illustration sits at the two ends. Ashton Jeanty played for the lowest volume rushing offense in the NFL, a Raiders team that ran it 21.7 times a game, and still averaged 15.6 carries because he took 72 percent of them. Kenneth Walker III played for Seattle, which ran it 29.8 times a game, fourth most in the league, and averaged only 13.0 carries because Zach Charbonnet took 36 percent of the backfield. The player on the worst rushing team out-carried the player on one of the best. Team volume alone would have told you the opposite.
What actually moves a carries projection
- Projected game script, which is the biggest lever. Teams that lead run the ball to bleed clock; teams that trail abandon it. This is the one input that can swing a projection by five or six carries in either direction, and the spread plus the game total give you a usable prior on it before kickoff.
- Backfield share, and how stable it has been. A 70 percent back and a 45 percent back on identical offenses are five or six carries apart. Look at the last three or four games rather than the season number, because committees change.
- The team's own run rate. Some staffs simply run more than others at the same score. The 11 carry per game gap between the top and bottom of the league is a coaching identity, not noise.
- Injuries and depth chart news, ahead of everything else. No other input matters if the backup is out and the workload consolidates. Carries are the market most sensitive to a Friday practice report.
- Goal line and short yardage role. A back who cedes the 1 yard carries loses attempts in the exact spots where volume concentrates, which also caps his anytime touchdown equity.
- Weather, mildly. Wind and heavy rain nudge play calling toward the run, but the effect is smaller than most people assume and is usually already in the total.
- Pace and expected plays. A slow, run first game with few possessions can hold total carries down even when the run rate is high.
Where the market misleads
Yards per carry is not part of this bet. Efficiency draws attention because it is on every broadcast graphic, but it has no bearing on whether a player reaches 15 carries. A 3.6 yards per carry grinder on a leading team is a better over than a 5.5 yards per carry back on a team that will be down two scores.
Season averages hide committee changes. A back who opened the year in a split and took over in November carries a season number that describes neither situation. Recent share is the useful read.
Blowouts cut both ways, and not symmetrically. A huge lead usually adds carries for the starter early and then removes them late as backups come in. A big deficit removes them from the first drive onward. The downside case is the more reliable one.
A quarterback who runs is a tax on the backfield. Buffalo led the NFL in team rushing attempts and their lead back still finished behind Jonathan Taylor, because 112 of those carries belonged to the quarterback. Always subtract designed quarterback runs before applying a share.
Attempts and yards are separate questions. This is worth repeating because it is where most bettors leak value. If you like the volume but not the matchup, the carries prop is the cleaner expression of that view than a rushing yards line.
