What Is Pace of Play in the NFL?
Pace of play is how quickly an offense runs its next snap, usually measured as seconds between plays or as total plays per game. Faster pace means more snaps, which means more chances at every player prop and a higher ceiling on the game total. NFL teams averaged 63.3 scrimmage plays per game in 2025.
The three ways pace gets measured
People use "pace" to mean three different things, and they do not always agree with each other. Knowing which one a number refers to is most of the battle.
- Plays per game. The simplest version, and the only one published in official box scores. It is a count of scrimmage snaps, and it answers the question a bettor actually cares about: how many chances are there.
- Seconds per play. The time between one snap and the next, which is closer to what a coach means by tempo. It is not in any official table. Charting services derive it from play-by-play timestamps.
- Situation-neutral pace. Seconds per play filtered down to snaps where the score is close and the clock is not the point, usually the first three quarters inside a score or two. This is the version with predictive value, because it strips out the hurry-up a team runs when it is down 17 and the kneel-downs it runs when it is up 17.
Only the first is verifiable from a primary source. Treat the other two as useful but derived, and check whose definition you are reading before you compare two numbers.
What pace looked like in 2025
NFL.com's team downs table carries a scrimmage plays column for every team. For the 2025 regular season it sums to 34,417 plays across 544 team games, or 63.3 plays per team game, which is 126.5 snaps in an average game.
The spread between the fastest and slowest offenses is about eleven plays a game:
- Dallas 1,162 plays, 68.4 per game. The most in the league.
- Chicago 1,142, 67.2. Houston 1,140, 67.1. The Chargers 1,136, 66.8.
- Jacksonville 66.3, Denver 66.2, San Francisco 65.8, New Orleans 65.7.
- League median: 63.9.
- Minnesota 58.2, Miami 57.5, Las Vegas 57.4. The Raiders ran 975 plays all season, 187 fewer than Dallas.
Eleven plays a game is a real edge in a prop market. It is roughly one extra possession for each side, and every skill player on the roster gets a share of it.
Why two sources give you two play counts
This one trips people up, so it is worth a paragraph. Add up the components in NFL.com's own tables and you get a different answer: 17,439 pass attempts plus 1,287 sacks plus 14,601 rushing attempts is 33,327 plays, or 61.3 per team game. That is the figure we use elsewhere on the site, including in snap share.
The scrimmage plays column says 34,417. The gap is 1,090 plays, almost exactly 2.0 per team game.
Those are snaps that happened but produced no box score attempt. The NFL's Guide for Statisticians is explicit about the main category: on an accepted defensive pass interference, the down "is wholly a penalty play (yardage and first down). No pass attempt or completion is recorded." A snap was run, the clock moved, the drive advanced, and the passing table shows nothing.
Neither number is wrong. Use 61.3 when you are reasoning about attempts, carries and sacks, because that is what those plays feed. Use 63.3 when you are reasoning about snaps and time, because that is what actually got run. Just do not mix them inside one calculation.
Pace is not the same thing as scoring
This is the part most pace content skips, and it is the part that decides whether a pace read makes you money.
Run the 2025 season team by team and the correlation between plays per game and offensive touchdowns is +0.37. Positive, real, and much weaker than the way pace gets talked about in September.
Split the league into the eight fastest and eight slowest offenses by play volume and the gap is modest. The fast eight averaged 66.7 plays per game and 41.9 offensive touchdowns on the season. The slow eight averaged 59.3 plays and 36.4 touchdowns. So 7.4 extra snaps a game bought about 5.5 touchdowns across seventeen games, which is roughly a third of a touchdown per game.
The individual cases are sharper than the averages:
- New Orleans ran the sixth most plays in football, 65.7 a game, and scored 28 offensive touchdowns. That is 2.51 per 100 plays, second worst in the league. Fast and going nowhere.
- Houston ran the third most plays, 67.1 a game, for 33 offensive touchdowns.
- The Rams ran 65.5 a game and scored 65 offensive touchdowns, 5.66 per 100 plays, the best rate in the league. Fast and lethal.
- Buffalo was next at 5.35 per 100, then Detroit at 5.10.
- Las Vegas ran the fewest plays in the league and had the third worst efficiency, 2.56 per 100. Slow and going nowhere.
League-wide the rate was 3.84 offensive touchdowns per 100 plays. The lesson is that pace is a volume multiplier, not a quality signal. It tells you how many chances an offense creates, and says almost nothing about what it does with them. A fast bad offense is a gift to a player prop over and a trap on a game total.
What changes a team's pace in a given game
Season pace is a tendency. Sunday's pace is a negotiation between two teams and a scoreboard.
- Game script, first and always. A team trailing by two scores in the fourth quarter plays faster than any offense plays by choice. A team leading by two scores plays slower than any offense plays by choice. Reading the spread is reading which of those is likely, and it is the single biggest in-game input.
- The opponent's pace. Play volume is shared. Facing a grinding, run-heavy offense caps your own snaps no matter how fast you want to go, because you are not on the field.
- Offensive efficiency. A three and out is the fastest possible drive and the fewest possible plays. Sustained drives that stall in the red zone are the play-volume jackpot: long, slow, and full of snaps. In 2025 teams faced 12.6 third downs and 1.6 fourth downs per game, which is a rough read on how often drives reached a decision point.
- Weather. Wind and cold push teams toward the run, and running plays burn clock. The effect on totals is covered in how weather affects NFL props.
- Personnel. A backup quarterback usually means a slower, more conservative plan. An injury at running back can push a team toward the pass, which stops the clock more often on incompletions.
How pace moves each market
- Totals. Pace sets the number of possessions, and possessions are the raw material of points. But per the numbers above, only if the offenses can finish. Two fast, efficient teams is a total that should be high. Two fast, bad teams is the most common overpriced over on the board. See NFL totals for the full picture.
- Passing volume props. The most direct beneficiary. More snaps plus a trailing script equals more dropbacks, which is the whole argument behind a pass attempts prop.
- Receiving props. Snaps multiply by target share. A receiver on a 68-play offense sees meaningfully more work than the same player on a 57-play offense, which is why snap share and pace have to be read together rather than separately.
- Rushing props. The awkward one. Fast pace usually means passing, and a run-heavy team is slow by definition. A running back's best volume environment is a slow team that is winning, not a fast team.
- Defensive props. Pace cuts both ways. Your defense is on the field for the opponent's snaps, so a fast-paced opponent inflates tackle counts.
What you cannot verify, and should not pretend to
Seconds per play, situation-neutral pace and no-huddle rate are all genuinely useful and none of them appear in an official league table. They come from services that parse and time the play-by-play, each with its own definition of which snaps count. Two providers can publish different pace rankings for the same team and both be defensible.
So use them, but use them the way you would use any charted number: for ranking teams against each other inside one source, not as a precise value to plug into a model, and never mixed across sources. The play count is the number you can check yourself in two minutes, which is why every figure in this article is built on it.
One derived anchor worth keeping in your head: 126.5 scrimmage snaps in an average 2025 game against 3,600 seconds of game clock works out to about 28.5 seconds of clock per snap. That is not the same as the charted snap-to-snap figure, since it includes every stoppage, timeout and change of possession. It is just a sanity check on what an average game feels like.
