The problem with classic BvP

Batter vs pitcher history feels meaningful: "he's 5 for 9 off this guy." It almost never is. Nine at-bats is a coin-flip sample, and we covered why BvP is mostly noise in its own guide. The question worth asking is not "how has he done against this pitcher" but "how does he do against what this pitcher throws."

Pitch mix is the real matchup

Every starter has an arsenal: maybe 35% four-seamers, 25% sliders, 20% changeups, and so on. Every hitter has a scouting report against each of those pitch types built from hundreds of swings a season. Put the two together and you get a matchup sample that actually means something. A hitter who has faced a pitcher 6 times has probably seen four-seam fastballs 700 or 800 times this season alone.

A worked example

Say a hitter slugs .520 against four-seam fastballs this season, and today's starter throws four-seamers 35% of the time and rarely puts hitters away with anything soft. That hitter is going to spend a third of his night seeing his favorite pitch. Now flip it: a hitter who slugs .290 against sliders facing a starter who throws 40% sliders is in for a long night, whatever his overall batting line says. Weight each pitch-type number by how often the starter throws that pitch and you have an arsenal fit score for every bat in the lineup.

What to watch out for

Usage shifts. Pitchers change their mix. Weight recent usage, not April's.
Small pitch-type samples. A .600 SLG against curveballs on 12 results is still noise. Demand a real sample per pitch before trusting the number.
Handedness interaction. The same slider plays differently to lefty and righty bats, so arsenal fit works best layered on the platoon context.
Baseline by pitch. A .430 SLG against sliders is loud; against four-seamers it is ordinary. Compare each number to the league norm for that pitch.
