Does a Walk Count as a Total Base in Betting?

No. A walk does not count as a total base. Total bases are credited only for bases reached on a hit: a single is 1 total base, a double is 2, a triple is 3, and a home run is 4. A walk advances the batter to first but adds zero to a total bases bet, because no hit was recorded.

What counts as a total base

Total bases come only from hits, and the count matches the hit:

A player's total bases for a game is the sum across all their hits. Two singles and a double, for example, is 4 total bases (1 + 1 + 2).

What does not count

These all advance a runner or reach base, but none add a total base:

This trips up a lot of new bettors. Reaching base is not the same as recording a total base. Only hits move a total bases line.

Why this matters for your bet

If you bet a player over 1.5 total bases and they draw two walks and a single, the bet loses. The single is worth 1 total base, and the two walks count for nothing, so they finish at 1. The walks helped their on-base line but did nothing for total bases.

This is also why walks have their own market. A patient hitter who draws a lot of walks is a strong target for a walk prop but a weak target for total bases, because the same skill that earns walks (not chasing) can lower their hit volume.

How BetLogic helps

If you want to bet the walk itself rather than total bases, BetLogic's Walks tool ranks the hitters most likely to draw a walk today, pairing patient bats against starters who struggle to throw strikes. See today's walk prop targets, updated before first pitch.

Frequently asked questions

Does a walk count toward total bases?
No. Total bases come only from hits. A walk reaches base but adds zero total bases.
Do hit by pitch or stolen bases count as total bases?
No. Neither a hit by pitch nor a stolen base counts. Only singles, doubles, triples, and home runs add total bases.
What is the difference between total bases and a walk prop?
Total bases measures bases gained on hits only. A walk prop is a separate market on whether a batter draws a base on balls, which does not affect total bases.
Does an RBI walk count as a total base?
No. Even if a walk forces in a run, it still adds zero total bases. The run may count for an RBI prop, but not for total bases.
